I love smileys and emoticons they are so bright and happy and cheer you up when you are down. I love to use them on websites and instant messengers. I would love to know how to write new smileys or emoticons. I love to create avatars also. It reminds me of the days of paper dolls that you dressed in different outfits. I think playing in a virtual world with avatars and made up scenarios is a great way to escape everyday stresses. If we all acted more like happy smileys or happy emoticons the world would be a happier place.

Instant messaging, emailing, and posting on discussion boards are just some of the popular ways that people interact on the internet.  One ingenious way that people use to express their emotions online is by using special characters such as smileys, emoticons and avatars.  Some of these are created by putting together certain letters, numbers and punctuation marks to convey feelings of sadness or happiness.  Chat rooms are made more interesting through the use of avatars, pictures that describe your online persona.  One can choose from a set list of avatars or one can upload his own choice of picture - either one he has created or an already existing picture.

Emoticons are a very new term in our society. We didn't have them when I was growing up, of course we didn't have PC's in our homes either! I didn't even know that is what they were called until I heard a trivia question on them on Cash Cab. I love to use emoticons in my personal e-mails because they are fun and give the reader a visual of the emotion you are expressing at the time. I plan to use the emoticon that smiles and has a rose in its hand to send an e-mail to my Mom for Mother's Day.

The typed word in a post or email does little to express the nuances we usually express with voice changes, facial expression and body language. Don’t think you’re hip enough to express yourself with sideways smiles? That’s crazy! The first time my mother used a smiley on the internet I was shocked that she even knew how! I gained a new respect for my mom that day. As she turned on her computer and connected to the internet and searched online for expressions and came across a site that had internet lingo. While searching this site, she came across the abbreviations that are commonly used in moments of hurry. The part of this website that caught her attention the most was the section on expressions. There were faces on there I never knew existed. Imagine this in a time where the computer and internet are directed towards a younger crowd my mother was able to teach me something about this sideways smile.

Now the computer and internet is used to run a business, share deep moments with family and friends, network across America. Every now and then we just throw in a little sideways face to let the person on the receiving end of this face know just what is going on in our thoughts. The most common of all smiling faces would of course been the ever so delighted smile of excitement. =0) when you tilt your head and view this face what do you feel? I always feel happy and delighted. This person is expressing a warm, happy feeling and choosing to share this feeling with me. Of course the minute I see =0( I feel extremely saddened. Such a depressing face this is. His eyes are long with dread and his lips are turned downward in such pity and hurt. I can’t stand to see a frowning face.

Take that frown and turn it into a smile. Show the world you can conquer it all! The next time you connect to the world wide web and you post a blog on about your day on your favorite blog site. What are smileys?

Smileys (also known as emoticons) are a very popular method of communicating emotions and feelings. In a face-to-face talk it is easy to see if a person is serious about the topic of discussion or not.  Unfortunately, it is not so easy to do when reading a forum on the screen. Conveying emotions is however equally (or even more) important — imagine the consequences of offending an avatar
(real person's alter ego) on a forum you needed for your work only because he or she misunderstood your emotions.

Emoticons resemble miniature graphics symbols. They are "drawn" using special characters like
braces, colons, hyphens etc. The most important one is ":)" — the smiling face, which means that the person is not serious. Another variant is ";)" (mind the semicolon) — the person wants to be even less serious :). Obviously you can go to extremes like @–>– (did you notice a nice rose there?)
